there's a ton of reviews on this book, apparently you either hate it or love it. personally, i really enjoyed this book, the narrator was strangely relatable in a self-isolating, reclusive way.
wanting to avoid everyone and everything, and desperately doing anything to make time pass quickly and escape the thoughts and sadness of reality through drug-induced sleep (for me doomscrolling) was something that i had done to deal with my own depressive times of life. i imagine her to look like brittany murphy in uptown girls (love her and this movie <3), to me they had somewhat similar lifestyles but much different personalities.
this is the second book i've read by Moshfegh, lapvona still holds #1 to me but i'm loving her writing style, next on the list by her is death in her hands.
some quotes i enjoyed from the book:
"Oh sleep. Nothing else could ever bring me such pleasure, such freedom, the power to feel and move and think and imagine, safe from the miseries of my waking consciousness."
"I wanted to hold on to the house the same way you'd hold on to a love letter. It was proof that I had not always been completely alone in this world."
"Time could go on forever like this... Time would. Infinity loomed consistently and all at once, forever, with or without me."
"She was beautiful, with all her nerves and all her complicated, circuitous feelings and contradictions and fears."
xx, anika
